What owners describe

Air bags

Many owners describe airbags that did not deploy during collisions, sometimes resulting in injuries despite seatbelt use. A smaller number mention airbag warning lights, sensor or wiring failures, or unexpected deployment issues that dealers sometimes diagnosed and repaired.

Warning signs:
Some owners noticed the airbag warning light illuminated before a crash or intermittently, while others report no warning at all before the failure.
What shops did:
Some owners say dealers replaced a clock spring, wire harness squib circuit, or airbag sensor, while others report the manufacturer found no issue or the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired.
Mileage:
most between 15,000 and 70,000 miles, among 34 complaints that give it

“The floor wire harness squib circuit failed and needed replacement”

“They told me the air bag sensor had fallen off the car”

Brakes

Owners describe brakes that feel spongy or suddenly fail to stop the car, sometimes paired with unexpected acceleration, occasionally leading to collisions. Warning lights for ABS, traction control, or brakes often appear, and dealer repairs vary from fixing the issue to being unable to reproduce it.

Warning signs:
Many mention the pedal sinking or loosening before failing, grinding or screeching noises, dashboard brake, ABS, or traction-control lights illuminating, or a detached rubber pedal pad.
What shops did:
Dealers sometimes adjusted or replaced the brake booster, pads, rotors, wheel bearings, or pedal pad, though some owners say technicians could not duplicate or diagnose the problem.
Mileage:
most between 10,000 and 65,000 miles, among 34 complaints that give it

“I felt the brake pedal loosen up and the car started to roll forward”

“The rubber brake pedal pad came off causing my foot to slide off the pedal”

Speed control

Owners describe two recurring speed-control issues: sudden unintended acceleration, often while parking, and hesitation or delayed acceleration during normal driving. Many say dealers couldn't reproduce the problem, though some repairs like torque converter replacement or software updates were attempted.

Warning signs:
Many describe a pause, shudder, or vibration before the car surges or fails to respond, sometimes with revving noise or brakes that feel ineffective.
What shops did:
Dealers often could not duplicate or diagnose the problem; some replaced torque converters, adjusted brake light switches, or performed software/transmission updates with mixed results.
Mileage:
most between 0 and 45,000 miles, among 53 complaints that give it

“The vehicle would suddenly hesitate and pause for approximately four seconds before accelerating and driving normally”

“The transmission hesitates and seems to lose power when accelerating”

  • NHTSA 14V715000November 20145,650 vehicles

Suspension: front: control arm: lower arm

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2014 Toyota Camry, Camry HV, Avalon, and Avalon HV vehicles equipped with 16-inch and 17-inch rims. In the affected vehicles, the left-side front suspension lower arm may have been incorrectly manufactured. As a result, the left side lower arm may not have enough clamping surface area for one of the bolts that secures the lower arm to the lower ball joint.

Risk: Because of the insufficient clamping force, the lower arm may separate from the ball joint, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left side lower arm, free of charge.

  • NHTSA 14V576000September 201415,872 vehicles

Fuel system, gasoline: delivery: hoses, lines/piping, and fittings

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2014 Toyota Avalon, Camry, Sienna, and Highlander and model year 2015 Lexus RX350 vehicles. Fuel may leak from the one of the fuel delivery pipes in the engine compartment.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace any of the suspect fuel delivery pipes free of charge.

  • NHTSA 13V505000October 20139,795 vehicles

    Visibility: windshield wiper/washer: switch/wiring

Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."

Risk: A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge.

A recall only helps if the repair was done. Enter the vehicle's 17-character VIN on NHTSA's official recall lookup before you buy.
